Climate Change Business Innovation Grants

Grants are now available to support small- to medium-sized Tasmanian businesses to take action on climate change, focusing on local innovation, collaboration and partnerships.

Businesses can apply for a grant of between $25,000 and $100,000. Total funding of $550,000 is available.

Businesses must also be able to make a cash co-contribution of at least 30 per cent of the approved grant funding amount.

Grant applications close on Monday 17 November 2025.

Program objectives

The program aims to:

  • support Tasmanian businesses to take local, innovative climate action to:
    • reduce emissions and transition to a low-emissions economy
    • build resilience and manage the impacts of a changing climate
  • encourage collaboration and partnerships that improve information sharing and awareness of climate change impacts and opportunities
  • provide opportunities and co-benefits to the specific industry or broader Tasmanian community.

Program guidelines

This program is open to Tasmanian businesses with an annual turnover of between $500,000 and $55 million in either of the previous two financial years.

Applicants must also be able to make a cash co-contribution of at least 30 per cent of the approved grant funding amount.

This is a competitive grant process with limited funding. All applications will be competitively assessed. Applications that meet the eligibility criteria will not automatically receive a grant, and not all applications will be successful.

Project eligibility for this program is intentionally broad to support a diverse range of business and industry projects that will deliver on the program objectives.

Your project will need to do one or more of the following:

  • Demonstrate or trial a new or existing concept in your industry or the Tasmanian context.
  • Duplicate or upscale an existing concept.
  • Distribute information and benefits of a concept to the broader community for awareness and capability building.

To be considered eligible, projects will also need to:

  • align with one or more of the program objectives
  • identify a problem or issue and attempt to resolve it
  • be of broader benefit to the Tasmanian community
  • be undertaken in Tasmania
  • be completed within 18 months of signing the grant agreement.

For this program, innovative action means applying a new, novel or unique concept to your industry or the Tasmanian context.

What does co-contribution mean? Do I have to use my own money?

Successful applicants must provide a cash co-contribution of at least 30 per cent of the approved grant funding amount. This co-contribution ensures a shared commitment to the project's success.

Your application must include evidence demonstrating that you have the available funds to contribute 30 per cent of your requested grant funding amount, or have partners involved in meeting this commitment, such as a bank statement showing available funds or a formal funding commitment letter from the related party.

Can in-kind contributions be included toward my cash co-contribution?

No, in-kind contributions are not accepted towards your cash co-contribution amount. The cash co‑contribution must be in cash. In-kind contributions can be included toward your total project budget to support your application’s value proposition.

What can the grant funding be used for?

Funding can be used for project activities that align with the program objectives, such as implementing innovative climate solutions, purchasing necessary equipment, and facilitating collaboration.

What can’t the grant funding be used for?

Ineligible expenses include normal business running expenses, salaries, retrospective project costs, legal fees, and projects that have already received government funding.

Is capital expenditure, like solar panels, batteries or electric vehicles, eligible?

The assessment panel may decide to award grant funding to a project involving capital expenditure, such as solar panels, batteries or electric vehicles, provided the product is used in an innovative way that aligns with one or more of this program’s objectives and can provide broader benefits to the Tasmanian community.

How will applications be assessed?

Applications will be competitively assessed based on achievement of the assessment criteria by a panel of State Growth representatives with suitable relevant knowledge and experience.

Can I apply for multiple projects?

No, only one application per ABN will be considered.

What supporting evidence is required for the application?

Applicants must provide a project plan, budget, evidence of annual business turnover, operating address, financial viability and any necessary project approvals. Project plan and budget templates can be downloaded here:

How will the grant payments be made?

The entirety of the grant funding will be paid when an applicant meets the terms and conditions specified in the grant funding agreement. When requested, a valid tax invoice must be issued to the Department of State Growth for payment.

If you do not satisfactorily acquit your grant, including meeting the approved purpose stated in your application, by the due date:

  • you may be required to return the funding to State Growth
  • you may be ineligible for other grants from State Growth.
